Married for 48 years, Port Angeles Couple Wins $115,000
Says They’re Already Content Because They Have Each Other

PORT ANGELES — Fred Wegener of Port Angeles says he never expected to win the Lottery but still enjoys playing. That statement held true until he won $115,000 over the Fourth of July holiday weekend playing Hit 5, a draw game from Washington’s Lottery.

On Sunday morning, Fred went out to get his newspaper and decided to check a ticket that he’d purchased earlier that weekend. That’s when he realized he’d won $115,000. “The most fun part of winning was telling my wife,” he said.

Fred immediately went to go share the news with his wife, Renee. When he did, she didn’t believe him at first. “She said my face was too serious,” Fred commented. He said he went on to tell her that ‘Yes, they did win,’ and she quickly returned with ‘No, we didn’t.’ Finally, she believed him, but he admits that it still hasn’t fully sunk in for either one of them.

The couple has been married for 48 years, and Fred said they are so content because they have each other. The win also comes at a fun time since Renee’s birthday is coming soon. The couple plans to celebrate by going out to dinner. The couple also plans on purchasing a new truck with the winnings and putting the remainder in savings.

Fred purchased his ticket at Safeway on East Highway 101 in Port Angeles.

The state’s Lottery offers consumers several types of games: Mega Millions, Powerball, Lotto, Hit 5, Match 4, The Daily Game, Daily Keno, and Scratch.
